Carla Capizzi, Immediate Past President, Appointed to AWC National Board
Renee Gatz Publishes Book with the Help of AWC
October 2009 — When AWCNJ member Renee Gatz completed the manuscript of her first book, “Wise Words & Witty Expressions,” she reached out to fellow AWC members for help on getting it published. Using the AWC’s national email database, she was able to contact all AWC members and received over 200 email responses from across the nation. Women she had never met before offered up their publishing experience, contact information, thoughts and suggestions, and outlined the differences between self-publishing and working with a publishing company. The support Gatz received was so inspiring, it kept her motivated to get her book published. Ultimately, she elected to work with a start-up publishing company right in her own AWCNJ chapter, Woodpecker Press. All of these AWC connections resulted in the successful production of “Wise Words & Witty Expressions,” which shares a collection of the expressions Gatz’s parents spoke to her throughout her life to help her navigate life’s big and little challenges. “The production of my book,” says Gatz, “is a testament to the women who belong to this organization and the commitment they have to seeing their fellow members meet with success and the power of the network.” Read what Garden State Women and The Star-Ledger had to say.
Karen Streiff Receives Clarion Award
Karen Streiff, AWCNJ Board Member and Executive Producer of 24/7 Media, was presented with a 2009 Clarion Award in the Educational, Informational or Training Video Production category from the Association for Women in Communications for 24/7 Media’s video “Saving Energy in Retail Facilities.” The video was produced for Trane Commercial Systems (TCS) and shot on locations in Beijing and Shanghai, China. Pictured left are Karen Streiff (l) and Trane client Miriam Tensuan.
The video was the capstone of a “TCS in Action” employee video series of customer success stories illustrating the energy savings Trane brings to customers in various vertical markets. “Saving Energy in Retail Facilities” highlighted a Carrefours energy-efficient pilot store in Beijing and Trane’s Asia region headquarters in Shanghai, and included interviews with Trane and Carrefours executives as well as footage of the bustling superstore. The six-minute presentation was translated into six languages for Trane employees worldwide and distributed in both DVD and Windows media video (wmv) formats.
