Learning from Each Other: Colorado Student Chapter Visits AWCNJ

AWCNJ met with Student AWC chapter from Colorado to discuss communications careers on the East Coast.

Student Chapter Montclair Visit

January 23, 2013 - It was “East met West” on January 8 as nine members of the University of Colorado’s AWC student chapter visited Montclair to meet with members from AWCNJ. The students came to the East Coast to learn about career opportunities in communications in nearby New York City.

Organized by Carla Capizzi, one of AWCNJ’s past presidents, the casual get-together at La Couronne Restaurant in Montclair revitalized the more senior communicators, who found themselves inspired by the ambitious, confident young women for whom so many of us laid the groundwork.

“These young women are so focused and willing to see new things and learn,” said Laurel Bernstein, AWCNJ board member. “They’ve been everywhere. They try anything new. It was an amazing experience. We should be sitting up and taking notice of the generation coming into the workplace.”

The Colorado collegians included Brittany Moore, Amanda Moore, Ember Patterson, Taylor Meyers, Jessica Malknecht, Allyce Farino, Katelyn Taylor, Hannah Hochstetler and Alyssa Gertje. In addition to Capizzi and Bernstein, AWCNJ was represented by current co-presidents Holly Kaplansky and Fran Hopkins, as well as past president and founding AWCNJ member Barbara Hurley.

It was a refreshing treat for the seasoned communications professionals of AWCNJ to dine with the energetic, aspiring young women from the Rocky Mountains!
